Sean Coats turns heartbreak into a three-song journey through disappointment, anger and the slow acceptance that follows. Released August 30, Hello Cloudy Skies is the Pekin, Indiana singer-songwriter’s most personal and expansive project yet, blending fictional storytelling with emotions drawn from real experience. Recorded largely in his home studio while he learned more about production and sound design, the EP feels deliberately intimate, like someone working through a breakup late at night and turning the aftermath into songs.
“The Fool Behind The Glass” opens with soft strumming guitars and gentle, sparkly cymbals, creating a tender backdrop for Coats’ thick, deep voice. He tells the story of being the person someone keeps returning to whenever her other relationship falls apart. There is affection buried inside the disappointment, but also the realization that being someone’s fallback is not the same thing as being chosen.
“Freakin’ Leave” pushes that frustration further. Strumming guitars carry the track while Coats sings with an emotive sensibility, looking back at how much time he allowed someone to waste. This time, though, he is done waiting. The song has a satisfying sense of release as he finally tells her to leave, making it clear that he no longer cares who she runs to afterward.
Then the title track, “Hello Cloudy Skies,” slows the emotional temperature. Gentle guitars and warm melodies accompany Coats’ deep vocal as he addresses the people wondering why his smile has disappeared. This song shows how hard it is to heal from someone you used to give your all to me. It gives the EP its most vulnerable moment because there is no grand resolution, just the understanding that healing cannot be rushed.
Taken together, Hello Cloudy Skies feels less like a breakup record about getting over someone and more like one about learning to sit with what remains.
