Hiatus by Joh: Review
The Los Angeles Singer-songwriter lays down her vulnerabilities and wears her heart on her sleeve in the title track of her debut album, Hiatus.
A collection of original poems turned into songs the album is a heartfelt intimate chain of thoughts and experiences. Being the final song and also the song that the album is named after, it’s not hard to imagine the song’s significance. Like the rest of the album, this song is too driven by a melodious guitar and Joh’s sweet mellow airy voice.
The song starts with a bright descending acoustic guitar plucked riff and builds on Joh’s heartfelt singing. You can really hear the love, sincerity, and the vulnerability in her voice as she reaches out. You can really tell by the imageries in the lyrics that this is a really intimate piece of poetry to the artist. The strings and the vocal harmonies of the hook really bring together all the emotions to start it over again. A floating sub bass is present throughout the song that to me represented the subtle heaviness of the heart. Already poetically beautiful, Joh’s presentation of the lyrics not only through her voice but also through the composition really breathed life into it. This album couldn’t ask for a better ending. As a matter of fact, I have been playing it on repeat to figure out the notes on my guitar. A sincere serene serenade…
