High Go Down by Joshua Martin: Review
LA singer-songwriter Joshua Martin’s latest single ‘High Go Down’ is a nostalgic throwback to the retro sounds of the 80s.
With high-pitched synth riffs and syncopated melodies, Joshua Martin brings back the timeless sound of the 80s synth wave in his latest release. His airy deadpan delivery of the lyrics adds a neat dramatic element to the song. He sings about the ongoing tension in a relationship over the fast-paced synth riffs. His steady airy vocals balance out the fast rhythm beautifully and keep you hooked listening to the song. He never really goes over the top with the vocals but doesn’t shy away from showing off his chops either. Maybe it’s the theme of the song or the layers and layers of synth melodies that kept things really tight.
Musically what stands out about this song is with all its retro sounds, it still feels like a modern and fresh indie record. The bright synth sequences sound tight and balanced with several layers of harmonized beats and melodies. Syncopated beats add a nice backdrop to the ongoing sequences. The airy deadpan vocal delivery fits right in the mix and gives it a dreamy atmosphere. In my opinion, it’s the vocals that give this song the oomph factor. You’ll come for the synths, and stay for the vocals. By the time it gets to the chorus, you’re already vibing and the relatability of the lyrics is just a bonus.
