Hip-hop’s Essence Flows Flawlessly in “I Like People” by 18 Acres
With a fresh perspective in songwriting and a rhythm section filled with elements of nu-jazz, 18 Acres arrives with their hip-hop number “I Like People”. The rapper’s energy and choice of words are quite spectacular. A creative flow that comes alive in the lyrics contributes to the art of self-reflection, and with the added instrumentation it just gets better.
The nu-jazz components throughout the song evoke a scene from a lush meadow, due to its calming piano sections and minimal bass lines. With the addition of smooth rap sections, the poetic elements are quite vivid and solid. Old-school hip-hop dominated an important era in that genre’s history. As it incorporated jazz melodies, I can’t help but feel nostalgic when hearing “I Like People” because it contributes to a similar rhythmic nature. Nevertheless, the overall vibe from the music of 18 Acres has an original take, and it is mostly because of the unfiltered and opinionated rap verses from the artist.
18 Acres conveys a hip-hop art form that jazz enthusiasts can particularly find entertaining. However, the artist’s original sound is a serene and woke melody for a global appeal. Interestingly enough, 18 Acres mentions their influences to be Lou Reed, Tribe Called Quest, Cypress Hill, Fresh Prince, and The White Stripes! The hip-hop artist 18 Acres composes songs about rural lifestyle as well as the variability of opinion and fact.
