Svarp The Harp, the bluesman from Fürstenwalde/Spree, Germany, steps into the spotlight with his rendition of the Willie Dixon classic “Hoochie Coochie Man,” released October 20, 2023. Recorded at Wolvesinsound Studio in Berlin, this cover single pays homage to the roots of blues while carrying Svarp’s unmistakable touch. Drawing from influences like B.B. King, Muddy Waters, and John Lee Hooker, he leans into clarity, warmth, and the spontaneity of live performance. It’s a handmade production through and through, marked by a memorable one-take slide guitar addition that injects personality into a well-trodden standard.
The track kicks off with a playful, building rhythm, steady and unhurried, laying down the kind of groove you’d expect to hear spilling out of a smoky juke joint. Then Svarp’s thick, resonant, charismatic, and grounded voice comes in to guide the song with authority while keeping the mood light.
The drums thump along in a slow, deliberate cadence, never rushing, allowing the song to breathe and settle into its own pocket. What’s striking here is how often the instrumentals take center stage, the guitar lines wander and playfully stretch, and the slide guitar glides warmly across the mix. It’s loose, unpretentious, and above all, fun. And it’s so easy because blues doesn’t always need to be heavy to hit home.
Svarp The Harp’s “Hoochie Coochie Man” honors tradition while letting his own quirks shine. Listen to it on Spotify.
