“How to Love” by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sam Way is a poignant spoken-word piece that ventures deep into the ways of love. Released just before Valentine’s Day 2024, this debut spoken-word single emerged just from the third take, recorded live at Midnight Studios in Malta.
Accompanying Way’s heartfelt words is an improvised piano line by chart-topping composer Edward Abela. The subtle melodies gently cradle Way’s voice, creating an atmosphere of introspection and quiet intensity. The piano’s simplicity enhances the weight of the spoken words, making every phrase land with purpose.
“How to Love” reads like an intimate monologue, grappling with the multifaceted nature of love. Way’s deep, composed voice imbues the piece with sincerity as he moves through different shades of love—romantic, self, lustful, absent, and even loveless. The poem skillfully juxtaposes questions and reflections, such as “If love is all there is, then why is love not enough?” with raw admissions of vulnerability: “I think I’m addicted to you / Addicted to love.”
Way’s exploration touches on universal and relatable themes that we can connect to: love as a rollercoaster, love’s inadequacy despite its centrality, and the contrasting experiences of joy and heartbreak. His words help us mirror our own struggles and triumphs with love.
Beyond its artistic merit, “How to Love” holds a philanthropic significance. Proceeds from the poem’s release helped raise over £200 for the Syrian Earthquake appeals, demonstrating Way’s commitment to using his art for meaningful causes.
Listen to Sam Way’s “How to Love” to discover that the journey of learning how to love is universal.
