Toronto-based Indian artist Achanté’s latest single, “I Am The Sun,” is an empowering feat of self-realization that journeys into the soul with the impact of both Eastern and Western influences on the music.
“I Am The Sun” opens with a soft tune while an immersion sways under glimmering chimes, creating an atmospheric and enchanting introduction. Then the beats drop and keep a catchy rhythm over thick and wispy harmonies. The music, featuring neo-jazz and soul is a perfect, contagious and hypnotic complement to the lyrics.
The singer’s calm and entrancing voice emerges. Achanté sings, “You might think I am selfish, but I just keep me happy.” Her voice lifts to an ethereal falsetto as she sings the chorus, “I am the sun/I heal, I burn.” The chorus metaphorizes our state of self, lifting our ordinariness to the realm of nature that builds and elevates.
The outro pulls us to a concluding state of the whole ordeal, for which the singer’s voice alters to a heady constancy. Bringing a tranquilizing and meditational effect with her delivery, along with the spiritually uplifting lyrics, she sings, “I am full of love/from my feet up to my head.”
The music video for “I Am The Sun” shows the singer walking by nonchalantly only to find a glowing, fiery orb above which she touches to find herself in a field of sunflowers. Before her, stands a deity-like version of herself who she chases. In the end, finds the woman in a mirror who she sees, and reflects herself, conveying that is her alter ego, her true self.
“I Am The Sun” is the fourth and standout track from Achanté’s debut EP, Journey to the Centre of the Hearth. Released this Aug 30, the EP is available on Spotify.
