Jazz drummer, composer, and bandleader Curtis Nowosad’s EP, If I Had, tributes iconic socially conscientious songs with his instrumental covers that ooze with engaging and contemplative jazz.
The four-track EP, released on Oct 20 opens with “Road.” It unfolds over almost 8 minutes with rhythmic beats guiding the listener through a guitar-driven narrative. The song exudes a comforting calmness and authenticity. It invites the audience into a contemplative space.
“If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)” follows with pattering and ticking percussion, accompanied by groovy guitars. Nowosad’s rendition breathes new life into the protest anthem, infusing it with a fresh and vibrant energy.
“By The Time I Get to Phoenix” takes a slower, atmospheric turn, allowing contemplative guitars and emphatic drums to create a more immersive soundscape. The arrangement provides ample space, enhancing the absorbing vibe of the song.
The EP concludes with “Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away,” a more upbeat track featuring splashing cymbals, pounding drums, and smooth guitars. The pronounced drums in this composition contribute to its lively and dynamic atmosphere.
Curtis Nowosad has been known for expressing social themes through his art. He once again proves to be committed to his conscientious approach to music with the four jazz instrumental cover collection, If I Had. Nonetheless, the EP would be incomplete without the indispensable and irreplaceable efforts of guitarist Andrew Renfroe and bassist Luke Sellick. They provide the entire storytelling tone of the music with meticulous guitar work.
