Industrial Love by Mote: Review
Mote has been writing songs and singing in bands since he was seven years old. Even at his lowest, the gifted American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist has never abandoned music. With a string of tracks published since 2021, including the most recent addition, “Mote,” listeners get the opportunity to see his talent in action once more.
Mote moved to Berlin from Nashville’s flourishing music scene, bringing with him the city’s enthusiasm and passion for art. “Mote” is the result of a love affair between alternative pop and post-punk, with a bit of rock thrown in for good measure. The fast-paced percussion and smooth bass riffs provide an unusual contrast of energy, which is accentuated with sharp, lingering electric guitar tones. The song’s electric instrumentation and sulky, sensational vocals make it ideal for a late-night listen with headphones. As the song’s bridge approaches, there is a sudden change in the tempo, accompanied by distorted vocal harmonies that suck you into a whirlwind of emotions and leave nothing behind. You are entirely immersed in Mote’s soundscape.
“I started thinking about how the world we are born into is already so constructed around us, and even if we try to shape it, there is a sort of machine in progress that you have to reconcile yourself with”, Mote said of his inspiration for the song, ” Then I thought about how this relates to love and how ultimately love chooses you. I’m not so sure we have much to do with it, even if we think we do.”
