DOVE-i gets behind concepts and themes that pulses in our veins through the darkest of times the Earth has faced in their latest album, It’s Pop Fiction, released on April 19. Composed, orchestrated, and produced by Thomas Verovski and Bastide Donny, this album is a masterclass in cinematic storytelling through music.
“Quarantine – Opening” opens the album tensely like the Covid-19 qurantine started with worrying concerns before it blew up. The strings pull with an aching swell and the beats come hitting hard with a head-nodding sensation. This prelude will become your ultimate go-to guilty pleasure before it even turns you to the next track.
As a Morcheeba fan, I am highly taken by “Metamorphosis – Cinematic version.” It features the ethereal vocals of Chinese-British singer FiFi Rong, who against an enigmatic and exotic backdrop, delivers a surprisingly ecstatic chorus that leaves you exhilarated in its anthemic pull. Another highlight is “Create – Extended Version,” featuring the soft yet catchy vocals of Julie Tuzet engaging us effortlessly over the orchestral backdrop.
But perhaps the most haunting track on It’s Pop Fiction is the final one, “Earth.” It starts tragic with its slow-burning intensity and melancholic violin-led melody. The layers of beats and guitar riffs build to leave us touched with the violin wailing a soliloquy, as if speaking for the earth.
Also don’t forget to check out the award-winning music video of the hip-hop track, “THE REVOLUTION,” raising the significance of the BLM movement. Get the surreally cinematic experience of DOVE-i’s best with It’s Pop Fiction.
