“Duck for Cover” by a little place called Aspen is a firecracker of alt-pop chaos, heartbreak, and charm, wrapped in a shiny, high-energy package. Released May 16, 2025, this track has become the fourth release from the five-member Toronto-based band that’s rapidly earning its place among the pop-alternative scene’s most exciting newcomers. With a sound reminiscent of Valley, the Band CAMINO, and joan, Aspen mixes sharp, synthy production with emotional storytelling to create an equally exhilarating and cathartic whiplash.
The song kicks off with thick, fuzzy drum textures before dropping clean into a groove-heavy rhythm that instantly hooks. Melodic, chiming guitars layer the beat with just the right amount of shimmer, while the lead vocals, my personal favorite, steal the show with charisma and flair. The addictive way the singer delivers lines like, “Tossing words like grenades / And we both duck for cover”—equal parts tongue-in-cheek and devastating.
Despite the emotional weight of the lyrics, touching on self-destruction, regret, miscommunication, and toxic cycles, “Duck for Cover” sprints through the fire with its head held high, turning every emotional bruise into a danceable beat drop. He sings, “Red flags wavin’ but I always love you,” which hits especially hard when wrapped in such a confident, feel-good sound, even though such a tragic song shouldn’t feel this good.
Recorded and produced by the band themselves and mixed by Grammy-nominated Dan Brodbeck, the track sounds tight, clean, and professionally layered into the visceral feelings. With monthly music drops planned through 2026, Aspen’s momentum is undeniable. Stay tuned to the band for more such hits coming up.
