Brisbane’s Massy, freshly 18 and fresh out of high school, arrives with a debut album that feels anything but beginner. Jet 5, his 14-track introduction to the wider rap world, builds on the SoundCloud buzz he’s been nurturing since 2023 and stamps him as one of the sharpest young voices emerging from Queensland’s scene. The title nods to his crew, his day-ones, and his ethos, which connote equality, loyalty, and refusing to fold under pressure. That energy runs through the whole project like an electric current.
The album kicks off with “Whiteboyfriend,” a track that slips in like a ghost through cracked windows. The soundscape is eerie, immersive, almost fog-like, with the distant sound of someone coughing, which weirdly amplifies the tension. Massy’s high voice cuts through the haze, rapping coolly and confidently, as if he’s strolling through the beat with hands in pockets and something sharp on his mind. It’s a killer opener, unsettling and magnetic at the same time.
Then somewhere down the tracklist, Massy drops “CPR,” a dreamy, hypnotic standout built on mesmerizing floating synths and a beat that snaps clean but soft. Disk scratches flicker around the edges, merging so seamlessly they feel like part of the atmosphere. Massy slips into the pocket with ease, rapping, “Why would I be mad at something I can’t control?… I need CPR / Bitch you took my breath,” turning vulnerability into swagger mid-bar. It’s catchy enough to loop in your head for hours as well.
By the time we reach “Jet 5,” the mission statement comes into full focus. Heavy bass drops like concrete blocks while airy melodies hover above, creating a contrast that mirrors Massy’s rural-to-city upbringing. He raps nonchalantly, confidently, almost conversationally about his rise, his successes, his crew. He’s literally reporting from the front lines.
For a debut, Jet 5 is startlingly self-assured. It’s raw, atmospheric, clever, and distinctly Massy. The young artist is already writing like he’s lived three lives and rapping like he’s just getting started.
