Torontoโs fxrrst returns with โLavender,โ their first single since 2021 and a powerful exploration of trauma and resilience. The song, self-produced by Holly and Matt, is as indie-rock as it gets. But 2000s emo fans will also feel at home here.
โLavenderโ opens with a driving force of incessant guitar riffing and drums pounding relentlessly, only to be turned upside down by Hollyโs voice. Her voice, thick and rich, aches with agony and frustration. She portrays crying out against the emotional turmoil caused by abuse.
The verses unfold like a diary entry, contemplative and deeply personal. Holly narrates her experience, her storytelling tinged with a sharp awareness of her own pain. She tries to console herself, singing, โplease donโt cry/stay here for a while/donโt feel sad for me.โ
The instrumentation throughout is a surprising counterpoint to the emotional weight of the lyrics. Energetic and almost playful, it creates a sense of light amidst the darkness. This juxtaposition could be interpreted in a few ways: perhaps as a coping mechanism, a reminder that life goes on, or a way to avoid dwelling on the pain. Whatever it is, it sure helps the listeners make light of the situation and stay simply for the engaging music while relating to the honest candor of the lyricism and the heartbreaking delivery.
โLavenderโ success is further solidified by their impressive resumeโover 1.5 million Spotify streams, radio play across the globe, nominations for prestigious awards, and festival appearances alongside established acts.
So, listen to โLavenderโ by fxrrst.
