Scottish Festival band Have Mercy Las Vegas returns with their second album, Light and Shade, released digitally on March 11, following their special release at Denny Civic Theatre in Dumbarton on March 9.
With Jamie Savage behind all the recording and mastering at Chem-19 Studios, find Folk/Americana album coming strong with bluesy undertones and dynamic and organic soundscapes.
Light and Shade opens with “Vanity Gate,” a slow and meditative track that sets the tone for the album. The delicate acoustic guitar plucks its glinting strings as the ethereal vocals of the lead singer intertwine with harmonies, creating a tender and rich soundscape that invites us into the band’s world.
Moving forward, “Boon Step” introduces a tapping, catchy rhythm with a folksy current, accompanied by an engaging anthemic duet crafting lasting, memorable melodies. The album takes a haunting turn with “Costa,” where the soundscape slowly builds in intensity, culminating in ominously rumbling drums and storming distorted guitars that send shivers down the spine. The crooning vocals are the theatrics you need to get perturbed in sensation.
“Hold Tight” carries a melancholic and swelling cinematic undercurrent. The duet portrays a couple urgently pleading to “hold tight” through the difficulties in their relationship with surging vocals and swelling and blazing instrumentals that tug at the heartstrings.
Closing the album is “Rock Paper Scissors,” where the singer’s husky and deep voice takes center stage, delivering raw and passionate lyrics about a relationship gone sour with mind games and harsh words.
Listen to Light and Shade to find different worlds within music, merging through the masterful hands of Have Mercy Las Vegas.
