There’s a fine line between chaos and charm, and Phytö dance all over it with “Like Poles.” The track arrives as a bright, off-kilter burst of energy, less heartbreak ballad, more neon-lit spiral through attraction, confusion, and self-delusion. Known for blending funk grooves with a modern, slightly nostalgic twist, Phytö double down here, pulling in everything from 8-bit textures to alt-rock swagger. It results in something that feels like a pinball machine on overdrive. It’s erratic, addictive, and weirdly emotional underneath all that noise.
“Like Poles” kicks off with a glitchy, arcade-style intro, with those flickering 8-bit sounds setting a playful but chaotic tone. Then, almost without warning, it drops into a groove-heavy funk rhythm, where the guitars start riffing with melodic flair and the drums hit with a punchy, no-nonsense thump. There’s a tug-of-war happening between tight musicianship and loose, reckless energy, and honestly, that friction is what keeps things exciting.
Vocally, the carefree messiness works in the song’s favor. The delivery feels spontaneous, almost like the singer’s tripping over his own thoughts in real time, fully caught up in the moment. He sings about dizzy attraction and awkward desire, leaning into humor and self-awareness, framing rejection through the metaphor of magnets that repel. It’s clever and witty, and when the line “I’m not fine and you?” lands later on, you realize the mask has slipped just enough to sting.
By the time the hook rolls around, there’s this almost tongue-in-cheek bravado, “guitar, booze, ciggy” as a stand-in for coping, that keeps things grounded in reality. Still, the bridge pulls things inward, hinting at something more vulnerable beneath the noise.
All in all, “Like Poles” is a high-voltage contradiction that comes off both playful and pained, polished and chaotic—and that’s exactly why it works.
