Dr. Leonardo Barilaro, better known as The Space Pianist, unveiled his latest single, โListen,โ on August 29, 2025, as the official soundtrack for Polymath Festival 2.0. True to his title, Barilaro once again blurs the line between science and art, turning real NASA space recordings into intimate cosmic art piece.
The track was recorded at Steinway Dubai, with engineering support from Gazelien Records at NYU Abu Dhabi and mixing by Daniel Basurto Fojaco. Following on the heels of Moon Seeds, his collaboration with Tina Guo streamed directly from the ISS, โListenโ further cements Barilaroโs role as a cultural ambassador of space art.
The song kicks off with the unearthly breath of the solar wind, captured by NASAโs Parker Solar Probe, immediately transporting the listener out of Earthโs atmosphere. Gentle piano enters almost like starlight, each note carefully measured yet expansive, slowly growing into lighter clinks and pattering runs that dance against the cosmic backdrop. The soundscape then deepens, as sonorous low keys bloom into space, while electronic textures swirl and shimmer, evoking unseen magnetic fields. Itโs haunting, the way the piano seems to orbit around the static of the solar recordings, like a dialogue between humanity and the cosmos.
As the track unfolds, it transitions toward the ethereal crackle of the Aurora Borealis, recorded from Earthโs orbit. Here, the piece becomes almost cinematic, with the piano plucking over the auroraโs ghostly resonance as if mapping a bridge between the Sun and our planet.
โListenโ is a meditation and a journey. Barilaro asks us not just to hear space, but to feel its living pulse through music. LIsten to it on Spotify.
