HOMEGIRL!โs MEAT HEAD is what happens when best friends, raw talent, and an unapologetic DIY ethos collide. Fresh out of Phoenix, this album is a full-throttle ride through humor, frustration, and social critique, wrapped in beats that feel like Madlib, J-Dilla, and MF Doom had a jam session in someoneโs living room.
With all production, mixing, and mastering handled by Lou Bodegaโstraight out of his apartmentโthis album is as unfiltered and real as it gets.
The opener, What a Waste!, kicks things off in true chaotic fashionโone band member straight-up hates the album while the others convince him itโs fine. Itโs a hilarious, self-aware start that sets the tone for whatโs to come. Then thereโs Well Done!, a bluesy, atmospheric meditation with layers of airy backing vocals and a buzzing undercurrent. The rapping shifts between artists, from deep and grounded to fast and agonized, like someone barely keeping their head above water. By the time we hit Saab Stories, the album leans into its weightier themes. Intricate textures build tension, while the rapper spits social critiques with a repressed intensity that finally explodes in the bridge. The contrast between smooth instrumentals and raw lyrical fury makes it feel incredibly visceralโchoir harmonies even sneak in towards the end for that extra punch.
Then comes Meat Head, the title track, kicking off with a stand-up comedy clip before locking into a smooth bassline, a cool, consistent beat, and thick, hypnotic female vocalizations looping in the background. The rap delivery? Intense, smug, tight as hell. โI said I woke up with dread / I am feeling better off dead / Itโs me against the world / pushing the sled like a meathead.โ
What makes this album hit so hard is its authenticity. Check it out on Spotify.
