Hirehorse presents a delightful musical offering with their 13-track album, “Yolking.” This bedroom project, helmed by Sam Dillon with production contributions from Will Ainsley, delivers an intimate and introspective folksy album.
The album opens with “Hirehorse Blues,” an upbeat acoustic track engulfed in a cheerful guitar melody and muffled, sweet country and folk singing. The song is an excellent introduction to the band’s sound, immediately drawing listeners in with its laid-back charm.
“I Go For Coffee,” the second track, is a standout runner-up for its clinking beat, setting the foundation for a tender and beautiful melody. The soft and sweet female vocals are accompanied by a wall of atmospheric sound and Sam’s own vocals in unison. Altogether, they create an immersive experience that feels as though the instrumentals are raining down on the vocals.
Continuing the album is its title track, “Yolking,” which offers a unique twist with a voiceover that gives the impression of someone speaking through a phone, leaving a voicemail. This recurring element adds an intriguing and yearningly nostalgic layer to the song as the acoustic guitar strums along, emanating a bygone vibe.
Closing out the record is “Hirehorse Nights,” a track that immediately sets a nostalgic and wistful tone with its jingling pattern and deep bass. The blurred, husky, and amicable vocals of our singer, Sam Dillon, add a layer of warmth and familiarity and end the album with a comforting ambiance.
Hirehorse’s sound embodies elements of folk rock and Americana within a collection of songs in “Yolking.” Feel a touch of breezy ethos and authenticity rooted in a genuine love for the craft in “Yolking” by Hirehorse.
