Massive Cranes, comprising Adam Ostrowski(OSTR), Dan Thurlow, and Helen Fisher, has finally unveiled their debut album, โMonuments,โ by staying resilient and sticking through the storms with the power of music and friendship to heal.
The album begins with โThe Beginningโโaptly titledโa contemplative track that builds with steady piano keys and turns to glitzy beats pulsing with the verses. Sandwiched between the lines, โTomorrow is a Compass/Donโt follow it alone/Got caught up in false positives/In another/Of another place called home,โ Dan raps calm and collected spoken word verses. He raps about the traumas and anxieties we retain and forcibly scuffle through mundanity.
The titular track, โMonuments,โ gushes underneath the hard-hitting trip-hop beats with extraordinarily wistful sounds that flute through the spoken word and the sensationally soft interludes of Helen Fisher. Another song that caught my attention is โRobert Frost,โ with its eerie, thumping, stomping, electrifying beats and atmospheric electronic textures.
Culminating with the immersive and expansive โAt Sea,โ the song validates itself as the music washes over the keys with a gushing sound that reminds you of a heavy wave receding towards you. It feels as though the song is veering towards you to soak you in serenity. The poetic and descriptive lyrics begin with the chorus, โWe are alone in the ocean/the rest is at sea,โ which encapsulates the song, but the beauty only continues with the lines. OSTR beautifully illustrates mental health struggles with vivid imagery and a heavy electronic pulse.
Listen to the poetic masterpiece that is โMonumentsโ by Massive Cranes in entrancing shades of electronic music.
