Lea Anderson’s latest track, “More Than I Could,” beautifully captures the deep melancholy of unfulfilled love, wrapped in a soft, evocative, and sonorous soundscape. Part of her LP Pronounced Lee Deluxe, this song is the emotional anchor of the project, standing out for its vulnerability and delicate artistry, further enhanced by the accompanying music video shot in the picturesque streets of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.
“More Than I Could” opens with low, brooding strings that set a melancholy tone, creating a sense of longing from the very beginning. These strings are quickly joined by Anderson’s soft, delicate voice, which moves between high, airy falsettos and rich, full-bodied swells, remaining tender and touching as ever. Her vocal performance is mesmerizing, and the song swells with these emotions as Anderson belts out the final verses with her vibrato pulsating.
Produced, mixed, and mastered by D-Moet, the instrumental composition is lush, with hard yet sparkling beats that shimmer against the smooth flow of her vocals. Anderson’s gentle flute playing—a rare feature in her work—adds a unique, ethereal layer to the song, matching the sensitivity of her tone. The live cello played by Yuri Hart further enriches the track, giving it a soulful depth that makes every note resonate with the listener with the right swell of the string.
Lyrically, “More Than I Could” reflects the painful realization of love that slipped away. The song captures a universal experience many creatives can relate to. The line, “She loves you more than I could,” echos with heartbreaking finality and acceptance, knowing the lover has found something better, something she couldn’t offer.
The music video, shot in Old San Juan, cinematically portrays the heartbreak of the song with the vibrant and timeless scenery of Puerto Rico. Check it out on YouTube.
