James Ellis is wearing his heart on his sleeve and orchestrating it into a full-blown rock-opera tapestry. With his self-titled debut album The Earth & All Within, the Philly-based singer-songwriter jumps headfirst into the deep end, with a wild, beautiful splash. The emotional gut-punch of mid-2000s emo, the stadium roar of Foo Fighters, and a lush undercurrent of orchestral strings straight out of a movie soundtrack.
The opening track, “The Earth,” builds with thumping drums, sparking cymbals, and string arrangements that swirl like a stormcloud about to burst. Before you know it, you’re nodding along, feeling like you’ve stumbled into the middle of a rock symphony that’s equal parts grit and grace.
“I Never Liked You (Anyway…),” the punchy single that refuses to tiptoe around bitterness. It’s raw, it’s angsty, and it rips. The drums beat like a ticking time bomb, and the fuzzy guitars grind while strings slither in the background. You can practically hear Ellis clenching his jaw as he sings with that perfect blend of carelessness and rage. No surprise this track is already clocking thousands of plays on Spotify.
And just when you think you’ve felt it all, “& All Within” wraps up the album with a sucker punch of emotion. It starts low and aching, then explodes into a firestorm of vivid guitars and gnarly vocals. You can almost see the sweat flying off a stage light.
