Birmingham-born artist, formerly known as Mason Noise of The X Factor fame, Matreya’s latest single, “I Saw the Light,” is channeling his personal battle with depression and the slow, spiritual journey back to wholeness. And boy, does it show.
The song kicks off with a crunchy, almost tribal beat that gives it an earthy, grounded feel. From there, shimmering string synths swell in the background, building an eerie, creepy soundscape with suspense around the corner. Matreya’s voice and its natural uniqueness takes up full control though. It’s nasal, high, and tender. He sings like he’s flipping through pages of his diary, getting behind all the hard times, before stopping at the current date and how things are slowly peeling away, no matter how much the past lingers. The open vibrato in his delivery is delicate but smooth as silk in its relaxing expressiveness, it’s really giving that originality.
Lyrically, “I Saw the Light” plunges into the pain headfirst with lines like “Broken and bruised / In darkness and ruins…” before emerging with hope: “I saw the light / Something inside me had to die.” That duality—pain and transcendence—carries the entire track.
In the cinematic, artistic, and very well videographed music video, Matreya acts the part as convincingly as he sings it, portraying an emotional tug-of-war between light and dark with striking visuals and moody lighting.
All in all, “I Saw the Light” by Matreya comes like a spiritual checkpoint. Listen to it on Spotify.
