Australia-based artist The Finch Cycle aka Bradley Murray releases his debut album, Mt. Pilot, post-rock instrumental odyssey. Once a record store owner with a history in the band Sunny Disposition, he takes us through all the moods of post-rock.
The album opens with โSarah Tone In,โ setting the stage with gritty guitars and intense drumming, establishing a heavier soundscape, showcasing Murrayโs ability to create urgency and tension.ย
Tracks like โAn Avalanche of Hopeโ offer a stark contrast. Here, the guitars soar with an exhilarating drive that soars over a foundation of driving drums, creating an uplifting momentum.
Mt. Pilot also explores moments of serenity and intimacy with โParents and Friends,โ which harbors a shimmering soundscape built on soothing guitar chimes, offering a welcome respite from the heavier moments. โDiesel Handsโ takes a different approach to tranquility, utilizing soft, spaced-out percussion and slow, gritty guitar work alongside lazy brass melodies trailing imminently. Then the bridge brings gnarl and rage before being followed by pounding drums. The dynamic shifts propose excellent craftsmanship.
Mt. Pilot is a strong debut from The Finch Cycle. Murrayโs ability to blend contrasting emotions within a cohesive post-rock framework is impressive. The album offers something for a variety of post-rock fans. It will be interesting to see where Murray takes The Finch Cycleโs sound in the future. Stay tuned with this rising rock star.
