My Year by Bel Kil: EP Review
The work of Annabel Kilpatrick AKA Bel Kil is artistic bliss at its finest. Her synth-pop-infused EP “My Year” overflows with captivating beats and a heavy dose of mood music. The musician’s vocal pipes are truly breathtaking and accompany a cinematic thrill. Aside from that, electronica rhythm pieces along with ambient soundscapes direct the EP’s cadence.
“My Year” opens up with the self-titled track, and it’s a fantastic groove. Inviting along punchy basslines with a deep tone, and a resonating singer at the mic, the EP launches to an upbeat start. The Melbourne-based artist exhibits soulful vocal attributes in this opening number, and it stirs the anticipation of summer months partying out in the dazzling sun. The next song is a tad more folksy and experimental too. Bringing along an acoustic guitar and a thumping beat to the mix, “Escaping” is a melodic tornado worth holding on to. Aside from that, some intriguing percussion bits surround the track. From tribal bongos to epic beats, the entirety of this number is a jam from start to finish.
Bel Kil’s track “Cards” has an ambient melody met by a theatrical aura. The song and its delightful vocal bits remind me of Lana Del Ray’s melodic outfit, especially her initial numbers. Hearing “Cards” took me by surprise as a wave of symphonies rolled in with empowering vocals. Overall, it was pretty uplifting and comforting at the same time.
