Built from songs written across a decade, the Boston singer-songwriter Jillian Ann’s debut full-length release, When All is Said and Done, unfolds as a deeply personal journey through love, heartbreak, growth, longing, and self-discovery. Drawing inspiration from the grand songwriting traditions of the 1970s and 1980s while embracing touches of modern indie-pop melancholy, Jillian crafts a timeless project.
A Berklee College of Music graduate, Jillian spent years shaping these songs alongside producer Apostolos Papapostolou, travelling between Boston and Los Angeles to bring the album to life. The result is a richly textured pop-rock record where her expressive voice takes centre stage. There is vulnerability here, but also strength; tenderness, but also determination.
Opening track “Good Morning” eases listeners into the album with gentle piano melodies and delicate harmonies. Jillian’s rich, inviting voice glides softly across the arrangement as she sings about someone occupying her thoughts at every hour of the day. It feels intimate and warm, like reading an old letter tucked away in a drawer.
The momentum picks up with “Runaway Boy,” one of the album’s most immediate and memorable moments. Thumping drums and catchy instrumentation give the track an infectious pulse while Jillian maintains an understated vocal delivery that allows the emotion to simmer beneath the surface. The songwriting shines here, capturing the push and pull of a relationship that leaves a lasting mark long after it ends.
Later, “Black Dress” arrives as the album’s grand centrepiece. Beginning with a smoky, intimate atmosphere, it gradually expands into a towering rock epic. The guitars swell, the emotions intensify, and Jillian fully embraces the drama of obsession, fantasy, and heartbreak, with quite the cinematism of Lana Del Rey’s lyricism.
Throughout When All is Said and Done, Jillian Ann proves herself an accomplished storyteller whose songs feel lived-in and sincere. By the album’s final moments, it rapt you like a heartfelt reflection on where she has been and where she is headed next.
