There is a certain kind of music that refuses to rush. It doesn’t demand attention through explosive hooks or relentless energy. Instead, it invites listeners to sit quietly within its world and absorb every emotional ripple. Novitza’s From Darkness Unto Light is precisely that kind of record. The Montenegrin composer and singer-songwriter crafts an EP that exists somewhere between cinematic orchestration, contemporary songwriting, and classical expression, creating a collection that feels both deeply personal and strikingly universal.
The project carries an added layer of significance when viewed through Novitza’s artistic journey. More than a decade after travelling to London in pursuit of an opera audition that never materialized into success, he returns to the city through music created entirely on his own terms. Recorded and produced in London, From Darkness Unto Light feels like both a reflection and a triumph, embodying resilience.
The opening track, “A Beat More for a Waltz,” immediately establishes the EP’s dramatic character. Swelling strings rise and fall with cinematic elegance while measured drum patterns add momentum beneath the arrangement. Novitza’s rich, theatrical voice glides effortlessly through the composition, particularly during the soaring chorus, where his classical background shines through. It is grand yet intimate, like a ballroom dance unfolding in slow motion beneath storm clouds.
The emotional centre of the EP arrives with “Laeti’t Be the One.” Here, tapping rhythms provide a gentle pulse as Novitza delivers one of his most affecting vocal performances. His voice swells with tenderness and heartbreak as he sings about recognizing the end of something he once deeply believed in. The restraint in the arrangement only heightens the song’s emotional weight, allowing every phrase to linger.
Meanwhile, “Till the Stars Run Out of Light” offers a softer, more hopeful perspective. Flowing piano melodies and subtle orchestral textures create an atmosphere of reflection rather than anguish. Novitza sings with patient anticipation, gradually building emotional intensity.
Drawing inspiration from composers such as Max Richter, Arvo Pärt, and the cinematic grandeur associated with Hans Zimmer, Novitza succeeds in creating music that values atmosphere as much as melody. From Darkness Unto Light is an elegant, heartfelt work that finds extraordinary emotional depth in patience, silence, and beautifully crafted restraint.
