Official Shannon paired up with SFM 35.8 this March to create an empowering single, βNever Gonna Be Her,β that you are going to hit the repeat button on for the rest of the season.
βNever Gonna Be Herβ begins with a proggy guitar sound released in the space of a second as Shannon starts her verse, referring to abstract notions of societal expectations, insecurities, and intrusive thoughts regarding our bodies. Official Shannon emphasizes on her intrusive thoughts continually throughout the song as suggested by the lyrics: βThings were on my mind/ I wasnβt feeling myself/ Was always thinking Iβm behind.β
She poses a war on an entire battlefield in her song with the self-degrading feelings that she tries to combat by getting her head back in the game and eventually succeeds by forgetting bout her thoughts or worries.
Never Gonna Be Her is an upbeat song with an alternative pop melody that comes off sweet and fruity with the jumpy synth, the afrobeat, and the emphatic jazz guitar. Combined with the beautiful vocals is Shannonβs deep and low voice, which sounds more soprano when she elevates the pitch, especially when she sings her thoughts off her mind in the part, βGet the hell out of my mind.β
Shannonβs bridge is the icing on the cake with her sleek rap verse in her British accent, which gives her voice more authority and credibility for the purpose of this self-love single. If you havenβt felt good about yourself in a long time, Never Gonna Be Her is the reality check you need.
