Patrick Lawrence unloaded his latest EP, Nostalgic for Now fresh off the boat just this Jan 17. With the EP, he has released more than songs. Lawrence shows us his journey chronologically through a series of wondrous melodies in Nostalgic for Now.
Beginning the journey is “Toaster Song” with its warm, comforting, jangly acoustic guitar strumming to Lawrence’s storytelling voice. Some stand-out lines would be, “Looking for some meaning with a toaster and a dream/ And I know that once I find it I’m fuckin’ burning my degree” where he genuinely gives the letters form and imagination.
The next song, “Forever Home,” will make you melt as you imagine being “securely at home” in your partner’s arms. The relaxing pace, the lyrics, the soothing melodies, the enchantment—everything is there. And it turns out it was Lawrence’s wedding song, too.
To bring a little spice to the home is “Half Life” which shows us the persuasion we let go of when we are “comfortable”/“stable.” But do we ever let them go? Listen to “Half Life” to know more. Spoiler alert: It’s incredibly catchy!
Then comes “An Empty Room,” which made me realize it was about a miscarriage as I was listening to it. He sings, “Then all you see are angel’s wings as you’re watching him take flight.”
The 5th track, “Joy in the Journey,” shows the narrator accepting the present. Moving on to the last track, “These Are the Good Old Days,” we find Lawrence looking back at his golden years. He sings, “I guess I am just feeling nostalgic for now.” The guitar solo is the ribbon that wrapped the EP Nostalgic for Now beautifully.
