SoundFarm may have started life in a freezing barn outside Oslo, but the band’s music radiates warmth, chemistry, and unmistakable groove. Formed around the captivating voice of Marte B. Trolldalen alongside guitarist Tommy and bassist Ola, the Norwegian collective has built its identity on one simple philosophy: real musicians playing together in real time. Blending funk, rock, and infectious pop rhythms with a subtle undercurrent of Scandinavian melancholy, SoundFarm delivers music that feels as emotionally sincere as it is irresistibly danceable. Their creative spirit extends beyond the stage, too, as they also run a professional studio where they help people facing mental health challenges and intellectual disabilities discover confidence through music.
That authenticity is front and center on “Suck It Up,” a song born spontaneously during a rehearsal jam session. Rather than polishing every note into perfection, the band chose to preserve the original spark, recording the track live without click tracks or samples.
The groove immediately grabs hold with shaky percussion, swaggering rhythms, and thick guitar work that locks into an addictive pulse. Marte B. Trolldalen’s rich, low-register vocals glide confidently over the hypnotic instrumentation, bringing both sensuality and quiet authority to the performance.
The production tells its own fascinating story. Vintage analogue gear, including a 1960s Sonor drum kit, classic preamps, and an Ehrlund microphone, adds warmth to the recording, while modern digital tools maintain clarity. One of the song’s cleverest touches comes from an unlikely source—a bottle filled with rice, used to create the crisp sixteenth-note percussion texture that subtly drives the rhythm forward. Mixed and mastered by Tommy himself, the recording intentionally leaves small imperfections intact, allowing the performance to breathe with genuine character.
Ultimately, “Suck It Up” succeeds because it trusts the power of musicians playing together rather than technology doing the heavy lifting. Funky, soulful, and overflowing with personality, SoundFarm’s debut recording captures lightning in a bottle, proving that authenticity remains one of music’s greatest strengths.
