International award-winning classical pianist and pop-R&B singer-songwriter, Janet Noh is back with her latest single, a passionate, emotional and lush ballad, “Oh Child,” on April 30, the Mental Health Awareness Month and AAPI Heritage Month.
“Oh Child,” stripped down to just Noh’s raw vocals and piano, is a masterclass in minimalistic production. It embodies a sincerity that connects to those of us who might not understand what it is like to carry traumas. We know it’s sincere because it was written by the victim herself at a time when she was beginning to feel safe and needed to be healthy to cultivate a positive environment.
Produced by Janet Noh and Akini Blake, the song opens with gentle and smooth piano melodies, setting a serene and introspective tone. Noh’s grainy, deep voice glides out softly and smoothly, like a swan gliding through a glistening waterbed. Her enchanting and catchy delivery flows into the next lines with a warm, assuring tone. Her voice becomes a comforting earworm, embedding itself in our minds and evoking a sense of safety and solace. As the song progresses, her vocals grow more passionate, soaring effortlessly with a touching sensation that resonates deeply.
“Oh Child” lyrically showcases a tender conversation with her inner child. She urges us to trust again despite the scars of past abuse with the lines, “There’s love everywhere/Get off of that chair/And start walking towards me.”
Demonstrating her philanthropic soul, Noh is distributing the proceeds from the single to the Korean American Family Service Center.
Listen to “Oh Child” by Janet Noh to find out how simplicity can become strength, and how it makes room for intimacy.
