Outerloop release a new single ‘Just Behave’. Outerloop is a rock band from D.C. and Northern Virginia.
A mid-tempo stomp featuring singer Taisha Estrada wailing over guitarist Don Potter’s synth/fuzz guitar riff, Just Behave opens the band’s forthcoming LP (out June 10th) and sets the tone. Estrada delivers lyrics that deal in plain terms with themes of paternalistic authoritarianism in lines like ‘pretty girls don’t try to fight the new boy… Sit down. Just behave’.
Outerloop formed in 2019 when Taisha Estrada, a trained latin-jazz singer, answered a Craigslist “Vocalist Wanted ” ad placed by guitarist Don Potter who by then had already joined forces with drummer Patrick Gough and bassist Mike Larmoyeux. Bonding over a mutual love of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Soundgarden and Sleater Kinney – the quartet began writing songs combining heavy, propulsive post-punk instrumentals with Estrada’s virtuosic bi-lingual vocals.
After playing just a couple shows in late 2019/early 2020 and then being sidelined by the pandemic, the band cautiously started writing and rehearsing again in late 2020, and in February of 2021 recorded with J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines) at the Magpie Cage in Baltimore.
Outerloop resumed playing shows in the summer of 2021, notably taking part in the revived Fort Reno outdoor concert series. In early August, the band released two songs from the Magpie Cage recording sessions – “Seeping Mirrors” and “El Control” – grabbing the attention of the Washington Post.
An official music video for their song “Seeping Mirrors” – called “the kind of music video you get automatically entranced by” (Alchemical Records) – was released in December of 2021 followed by their debut EP, titled EP 01, on January 8th 2022. The EP was hailed as “a genre busting success” (Alchemical) with tracks like “You Don’t Get It” being described as “music from another dimension… emerges from the cosmic void rift with bared teeth and sharpened claws” (Yack Magazine) .
The band’s submission to the 2022 Tiny Desk Contest entry was a “standout” that “… would easily entertain a music festival crowd” (DCist) and earned the band a slot on the first night of the Tiny Desk On the Road tour, opening for this year’s contest winner Alisa Amador as well as 2021 winner Neffy.
Outerloop is currently booking shows writing songs and looking forward to the May 27th release of the single “Just Behave” ahead of their debut album due out on Friday, June 10th – to be celebrated with a show that night at Comet Ping Pong featuring Time is Fire and Auto Porter.
