Evol Walks, the heavy rock outfit fronted by powerhouse Australian-born singer/songwriter Leah Martin-Brown, takes a captivating and unexpected turn with their release of “Pet Sematary.” The name is known of course, it being an iconic and upbeat Ramones song. But Martin-Brown brings the emotion out of the energy with a haunting and slow acoustic cover of the iconic Ramones hit. Much more is to follow this cover though, because this is only the second single of an EP scheduled mid year.
“Pet Sematary” begins with heavy and contemplative guitaring that sets a shimmering and soothing aura. The acoustic arrangement takes the energetic and upbeat original in a completely different direction, transforming it into a melancholic and emotionally charged piece. Leah Martin-Brown’s euphonious and sweet deep voice, known and meant for its full-throttle delivery in Evol Walks’ high-energy performances, takes on a new dimension. Here it brims with melancholy and emotion.
A significant addition to this acoustic rendition, which is my favorite part of the song, is the magnificent violin, vibrating and chilling against our heart strings. It readily enhances the emotional depth of the song. The interplay between the guitar and violin adds a layer of complexity, emphasizing the haunting atmosphere created by the acoustic interpretation. The violin contributes to the overall emotion and serves as a powerful element in this fresh take on the classic track.
Evol Walks’ teaser, “Pet Sematary,” from the upcoming Acoustic EP will allow listeners to experience the hit song in a more intimate and stripped-down setting. Mark your calendars this June to find Leah Martin-Brown roaring back to life with her new EP.
