Sophia Mengrosso’s debut album Unforgiven is a molten fusion of operatic elegance and heavy metal grit, curating a home for vulnerability and volcanic rage. Drawing from a well of personal trauma, resilience, and creative rebellion, Mengrosso gets theatrical and raw, cinematic and searing.
The opening track, “Dream,” wastes no time setting the tone. Ethereal yet brutal, the song grinds forward with thick, distorted guitars as Mengrosso’s haunting, classically trained vocals cut through like a blade wrapped in silk. Her luscious and tormented voice rises with mournful power as an angelic harmony shadows her, tempering the intensity with grace. The track encapsulates how it feels to be consumed by someone else’s narrative. You will find this theme recurring throughout this record again.
“Medicate Me,” one of the album’s most affecting moments, leans into a haunting piano intro before detonating into a maelstrom of fiery riffs and thundering percussion. The tension between the softness of the melody and the heaviness of the instrumentation mirrors the inner war Mengrosso narrates between detachment and deep feeling, numbness and rage.
By the time we reach “Ship of Shattered Dreams,” the 13th and final track, the emotional and sonic stakes are at their peak. Churning riffs and relentless drums backdrop a mournful lament of a love gone terminal. Her lyrics evoke heartbreak with poetic devastation, floating on a “ship of shattered dreams” into a bleak yet beautiful oblivion.
