Two Whatevers build entire thought systems out of it. On Punk Deluxe, the Chicago-based duo of Eben Hewitt and Alison Brown blur the lines between philosophy, storytelling, and genre, crafting a brainy and instinctive album. With Ebenโs background in playwriting and Alisonโs grounding in philosophy, their collaboration turns into something like an ongoing conversation that spills into blues, punk, hip hop, folk, and everything in between without ever sitting still for too long.
At its core, Punk Deluxe plays like a protest record for the modern condition, as it pokes and prods at the systems we live in, consumer culture, identity, digital overload, asking what it really means to exist, to create, to love in all that noise. And yeah, it sounds heavy, but the duo keeps things playful, even a little chaotic, like theyโre tossing ideas around just to see what sticks.
The opener, โContent,โ kicks things off with a slick, danceable pulse, think club energy with a satirical bite. Over shimmering cymbals and a fluid groove, the vocals come in cool and detached, almost smug, dissecting the absurd lengths people go to just to be seen.
Then the album zigzags into different sonic worlds. The title track โPunk Deluxeโ leans into a bluesy, character-driven vibe, while โHuckleberryโ rolls along like a dusty two-step, full of rustic charm. โTaco Tuesdayโ throws in playful, offbeat flair, and โSusie Medusaโ dives into a darker, swampy trap fusion that feels gritty and unpredictable.
One of the standout moments, though, is โJust For Fun.โ Here, things slow down a bit. The guitars turn moody, the beat hits sharp, and the vocals shift into a deep, hypnotic storytelling tone. Itโs reflective, almost regretful, unpacking a relationship that slipped through the cracks. He sings, โI should have known betterโฆwhateverโ land with a shrug that feels heavier than it should.
By the time you reach โAstrocytes,โ the album drifts into something cinematic and surreal, closing on an intimate and cosmic note. All in all, Punk Deluxe is a thought experiment you can dance to.
