Neil C. Young’s latest project, ReWorks, Vol. 2 is an instrumental jazz EP that takes familiar tunes and throws them into a whole new light.
ReWorks, Vol. 2 is part of a four-volume jazz journey where Neil turns songs into jazz masterpieces, by dissecting them to his own ingenious Frankenstein transformation.
The EP begins with a 1965 tune, “A Mouse That Lived In A Windmill In Old Amsterdam” that Neil turns into a samba makeover, complete with bluesy, carefree guitar licks and sparkling percussion. It’s a guaranteed mood-lifter, perfect for kicking back and letting the good times roll.
Neil takes the pre-chorus riff from Olly Murs’ hit, “Troublemaker” and transforms it into a full-blown bluesy anthem. Sharp, hard-hitting drums lay down the foundation, while Neil’s guitar tunes over with suave swagger and attitude.
Start wondering what’s going on with the third work of ReWorks, Vol. 2. Marvin Gaye’s song, “What’s Going On?” is turned upside down to mirror the uncertainty and contemplation embedded in the song’s lyrics. Neil’s guitar takes center stage, weaving a narrative filled with unexpected turns.
Neil closes out the EP with a reimagining of Gabrielle Aplin’s “Miss You.” This track takes the most liberties, deconstructing it to make it emotional and sensitive. The song opens with a cinematic, wailing melody. Then, the drums drop with a slashing blaze of jazzy guitar. The catchy melody starts to yearn with nostalgia before it gets energetic with bustling drums.
Listen to ReWorks, Vol. 2 by Neil C. Young to learn the mastery of jazz redone like never before.
