Brudini’s latest single, “Rogue Oligarch,” throws you into a smoke-filled dancehall of post-punk chaos and whispers sweet existential threats in your ear. From the jittery percussion that kicks it all off to the brass explosion that finishes it in a crescendo of glorious confusion, this track is both a sonic riot and an intoxicating fever dream. Imagine if David Bowie, Tom Waits, and a rogue Balkan brass band got trapped in a London warehouse during a thunderstorm and decided to jam until the walls shook.
Brudini’s voice slinks in early, low and sensual, coasting through the track like a shadow in a velvet jacket. It’s thick with sultriness and cynicism, crooning the title refrain. Then the horns blast through the track’s gloom like drunken kings at a jazz funeral, lazy and luscious, slathering every second with ominous swagger. Just as you start to vibe with the groove, the guitars screech in, all teeth and fire, slicing through the rhythm against the horn, creating a weird concoction of sound you never heard before with a punk snarl that won’t be ignored.
Originally a B-side from 2020, “Rogue Oligarch” resurfaced like a political scandal, uninvited but impossible to ignore. Thanks to live shows in East London and a little nudging from the Poetry Brothel crowd, the song’s chaotic energy found a new audience and a well-deserved spotlight. Brudini’s upcoming album Vanishing Point is already looking like a wild ride. Listen to “Rogue Oligarch” on Spotify.
