Track Dogs have struck gold again with their rollicking new single “Ruby, Are You Mad At Your Man?” a punchy, joyous burst of folk energy that’s as charming as it is musically tight. Pulled from their upcoming double album Tracks Laid, Tracks Covered, this is a reinvention dressed in the band’s signature technicolour sound, bursting with vibrant instrumentation, radiant harmonies, and an irresistible rhythm you’ll feel in your bones. From the very first elongated cry of “Ruuuuby” that stretches out like a siren call across a dusty canyon, you know you’re in for something special. Garrett Wall’s vocals are bold and earthy, with that rich, full-bodied tone that anchors the track with emotion and grit. His voice soars and dips with theatrical flair, while the rest of the band rallies around him with a groove so tight you’d think they were one body, not four.
The cajón taps in sharply underneath, the bass walks with confidence, and the trumpet brings an unexpected but brilliant sparkle that transforms this into more than just a rootsy toe-tapper. It’s Track Dogs doing what they do best: smashing genre walls with joyful abandon.
What really elevates this track, though, is the way they honour the song’s Americana lineage while injecting it with fresh flair. Made famous by Buck Owens and others, “Ruby” has a storied past, but Track Dogs make it theirs. The tempo is amped up, the delivery more theatrical, and the energy feels ready to burst out of your speakers and into a dancehall.
With Tracks Laid, Tracks Covered just around the corner, “Ruby, Are You Mad At Your Man?” is the perfect tease. If this is the start of their early 20th anniversary celebrations, then count us in. Ruby might be mad, but we’re all smiles.
