Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rob Elo reminds you that you are not alone in your looping bad habits because he makes the “Same Mistakes” in his latest release. Hailing from Vancouver Island and currently based in Yellowknife, Elo brings his effortless versatility to the front with jazz and lo-fi tones.
“Same Mistakes” opens with a mesmerizing atmospheric introduction, drawing us into its immersive sonic landscape. Then pours the groovy and hard-hitting backbeat that the entire song runs on. Dave Lawson’s sax lazily blows in their thick trails, setting that jazzy lounge ambiance that gets you swooned and then ushered. You will find the piano keys pattering and frolicking in to drive the eventuality of the looping behavioral patterns.
Impressively enough, all these instruments, save the sax, were performed and recorded by Elo himself. Mixed by Max Frazer and mastered by Brock McFarlane, Elo ensures that every aspect of “Same Mistakes” is finely crafted and sonically cohesive.
Elo’s vocals enter the scene, effortlessly weaving through the instrumentation with a hypnotic quality. His high voice hypnotically turns you to “go round and round” on the repeat button, just trying to pin down the song’s aesthetic. With lyrics reflecting on the recurring patterns of bad habits and addictions and the struggle to break free, Elo delivers his message with laid-back numbness. His layered vocals bring soulfulness to the track, enhancing its hypnotic vibe and drawing us further into its spell.
“Same Mistakes” is only the first single of 2024. Expect another single very soon and an EP releasing this Spring.
