Galaxy has never looked so dope in the world of “Second Messing” by Galaxy Thief. A song about messed up relationships should never relate you to an imagery of the galaxy. But here we are, looking at the single cover art of Second Messing, which features a coalesced image of a man and galaxy. Perhaps it conveys the complex but spacious ecosystem of a relationship.
Artists can never run out of ideas, and one such exemplar is Galaxy Thief, who put a fantastic play on words with “missing” and “messing.” He sings about his girl calling him “in the dead of night,” telling him that she’s been “missing” him. But his thoughts and suspicions “mess” him around as he second-guesses everything she does.
The character poses a conflicted thought, second-guessing himself too, in the end, wondering if he watches too much TV. Now we could think of it as him being gaslit by an unavailable partner, drawing a conclusion from the lyrics. Or we can just take the words out of the lead guitarist and vocalist’s mouth: ‘Where most songs are about being either in love or out of it, “Second Messing” fills that no man’s land between being interested enough but still unsure whether you want to commit.’ And that makes sense too.
Between thrumming drums and grinding electrical guitar riffs, Second Messing is a fine tribute to the alternative-rock realm, with the fuzzy, feel good, light-hearted feel in the youthful voices of the vocals redolent of the sweet 90s we have left behind.
