When an artist wears their inspirations like a badge of honor, it’s a bold move and a sign of great strength. And Joshua Lloyd’s debut EP “Sick When I Wake Up” is an intoxicating creation, mastered with inspirations drawn from none other than Blink-182 songs and Green Day. He’s an intriguing fellow in his art because Joshua breaks the stereotypical barrier that you can’t take liberties to sounding like the gods of your musical taste.
Contrary to the belief that there’s not much hope in the realm of pop punk, he arranged a fusion piece to tantalize your musical tastebuds with unique guitar riffs and a catchy hypnotic trap beat. It has a strong sound that flows throughout with hints of stronger rock and pops incorporated into the overall sound.
In his lyrics, Joshua addresses violent relationships for this sophisticated creation inspired by Machine Gun Kelly and Modsun, but gives it a catchy tone. The addition of female vocals by Becki Morgan just attests to his originality and a more nuanced grasp of how to eloquently represent a certain topic in an introspective manner. The vocals, which are a point of contention, are superbly mixed and positioned, along with the clear-sounding guitars that have a consistent crunch. Furthermore, you’ll hear the boomy bass laced into a crisp percussion infused with fresh yet aggressive fills.
Ultimately, if you’re fond of alternative rock, then this project is the right pick for you.
