Germany-based artist XINTRA arrives with “SKIN,” a deeply atmospheric electronic ballad that wanders through someone’s bruised subconscious at 3 a.m. Created by multidisciplinary artist Heiko Ritt after a turbulent period of personal transformation, the project leans into ambient electronics, intimate storytelling, and raw emotional exposure. XINTRA builds an immersive world out of downtempo beats, analog warmth, layered synths, and vulnerable performances, drawing comparisons to artists like Bon Iver, Ry X, and Monolink. As part of the upcoming DAYDREAMS & NIGHTTERRORS project, “SKIN” stands out as one of his most emotionally devastating offerings yet.
Right out of the gate, the track drifts in with weary spoken word over slow, aching piano notes. It sounds exhausted, fragile, almost trembling under the weight of its own thoughts. Then suddenly, a huge atmospheric wave pours over the arrangement, swallowing the silence whole. The deeper piano trails beneath it like heavy footsteps through fog while XINTRA’s sharp, ghostly falsetto emerges with chilling restraint. The opening lines, “It’s hard to swallow, but the truth is I am losing it,” immediately establish the song’s emotional nakedness. He lays the wounds out on the table.
What makes “SKIN” hit like a ton of bricks is the contrast between despair and tenderness. The lyrics spiral through broken glass, demons, exhaustion, and dissociation, yet the chorus shifts into something almost compassionate. “If you don’t know where to begin, take time,” he repeats softly, like someone talking a loved one down from the edge. The sparse instrumentation slowly blooms into cinematic synth textures and orchestral swells, creating the sensation of floating inside grief rather than simply hearing about it.
By the end, “SKIN” becomes strangely comforting in its sadness. It offers gentleness anyway — and sometimes that’s the whole ball game.
