Something Unexpected by North of Tomorrow: Album Review
North of Tomorrow are a solid rock band that merges a variety of genres into their sound. Their album “Something Unexpected” is a diverse collection of music with bits of prog, soul, and alternative as well. The record is instrumentally captivating and has a fascinating vocal presence. Altogether, it creates a powerful resonance with the listeners that leaves them awestruck.
The album opens with “New October.” It’s a soft, almost ambient-like rock song. The rhythm section is pretty serene and is created through clean synthesizers and a delightful guitar piece. The energy is stunning, and each melody forms a connection with your soul. Next up, is the funky jazz-rock track “It Could Have Been Me.” It brings fusion music to the scene through trumpets, a deep bassline, and groovy drum segments. This essence elevates with the inclusion of an organ in “My Sweet Spot.” The track has an endearing narrative that mixes excellently with the jazz and soul music layers. There’s a sense of comradery between each band member, and the cohesion is delightful to hear. We take a break from all the energy and relax a bit to the song “We Were A Heart Away.” A beautiful cadence forms with pianos and elegant symphonies. The vibe is otherworldly and leaves you in a charming orbit of timbres.
“At First Blush” is North of Tomorrow’s prog rock apex in effect. This arrives through gripping guitar solos, shifting basslines, synths, and a drummer that seems to know every time signature known to man.
