If you love all things vintage, you will love ‘Sometimes Love’s Like That’ because it takes you to recollections of a medieval or Victorian romance with Tia Mcgruff’s voice and the dramatic rhythm. There is much imagery of a scenic fantasy in the folds of this song, with the dramatism leading us to accept that sometimes love is fleeting like a butterfly. She couldn’t have depicted the art of letting go in a more poignant and effortless way. But did she make any effort?
Tia begins the song with the guitar playing on the track in a finger-picking style that creates a gentle, folksy vibe. The chord progression is fairly simple, but it works really well with the melody and the lyrics. Her voice that follows the guitar is the star of this song, as it is rich and velvety, and almost Disney, might I say? The song not only sings of letting go, but it also demonstrates 1700s ballgowns, castles, moors, and meadows at the same time, as if the lost love is still innocent as a lullaby, just in a different time.
There are a few moments in the song where the guitar picking gets more intricate, which adds some nice texture and variation to the track. One of the most striking things about the music is its simplicity. It’s just Tia’s voice and an acoustic guitar for the most part, with some subtle piano and percussion added in later in the track. This minimalistic approach really allows the listener to focus on the lyrics and the emotion behind them.
