Soon by moshimoshi: Review
The math rock-inspired, indie band moshimoshi is based in Helsinki. They’re one of Finland’s most prolific guitar bands, having garnered international recognition with their debut EP in 2021 and establishing a reputation for themselves. The band has gained many new fans through various blogs, and its singles have ascended Spotify and Apple Music’s global editorial playlists. “Soon” by moshimoshi is a catchy guitar-driven indie-punk track, where the melodies are delicately aligned to fit the beauty of math rock.
From the very first note, I immediately understood that the math rock train is incoming. This is because the guitar rhythms follow a distinct clean tone, and the chord structures have a jazzy flavor to them. Besides that, the singer is on top of the world and declaring their alpha prominence with heavy vocal screaming and an edge only punk rockers can appreciate. There’s a fantastic diversity and energy present in the track, that can jog your brain and manage to wake you up just in time for school. So, while you’re complaining about the lousiness of class time lectures, gather around your mates and jam out to the youthful vibe of “Soon” by moshimoshi.
Math rock is a genre that is based in many forms around popular music. They have roots in lofi, rock, jazz, and it seems moshimoshi blended their own take through progressive screaming and the punk movement. The end result is art, and in fact, there is a genre in itself called art punk, in which I believe moshimoshi’s tale fits perfectly.
