Indonesia-based singer-songwriter Nadine Makalew has released her spellbinding latest single, “Spell On Me” this July 26, and it’s like a warm hug wrapped in a time machine, combining 2000s pop-rock with electronic music and R&B.
“Spell On Me” opens with soft and slow piano strokes and a building synth wave pulsing above. Just then Makalew’s soft and high voice comes through. She creates this sense of exhilaration with her tone. Amidst the dreamy, angelic, calming music, the beats drop, rustling steadily with just enough momentum to add to the music.
The artist doesn’t leave any stone unturned to get our hearts fluttering as the crooning and vocalizing backing vocals bring this hopeful and soulful uplifting touch to the ever-expanding music. Her voice gets richer as she expresses more of her emotions about the person she admires and enhances the romance with its full range of vigor and passion. Her vibrato thickens and thaws, and the bridge blossoms.
The harmonious refrain, “Put a spell on me” takes over us like a hypnotic spell, as though the backing vocals are casting a real-life, R&B love charm through the speakers. The pop-rock instrumentals grow in vibrancy and produce this colorful, earful experience that surrounds you like a spell.
“Spell On Me” is about a new crush and the joy of those first-date jitters. It shows how sometimes the most magical moments are the simplest gestures of love. This is just a taste of what’s to come from Nadine Makalew’s upcoming album Time Traveller, so stay tuned.
