The Willful Deaf arrives with โSpirit of Youth,โ a genre-blurring single released on April 21, 2026, and it feels like a curious traveller with dust on its boots and electricity in its pockets. Led by British singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Mathew John Wats, the Dublin-based project pulls together folk, psychedelic rock, electronica, and dub, as the track moves naturally, shaped across Seville, Antwerp, and Dublin, with Argentinian banjoist and mandolinist Nicolas Sokolic adding extra colour to its already wide-open sound.
There is a real collective pulse here too. With Nick Holder on drums and percussion, Lucio Cavallari on keys and AV design, and Roberto Lusardi on bass, โSpirit of Youthโ carries the feel of musicians listening closely to one another. Fans of adventurous labels like Warp, 4AD, Bella Union, Partisan, and Ninja Tune may find plenty to chew on, especially in the way the song lets earthy textures and strange atmospheres shake hands.
Right from the opening, the track settles into an organic, folksy groove that feels warm, lived-in, and gently hypnotic. The rhythm does not rush; it strolls with purpose. Watsโ deep, husky voice slides in with quiet magnetism, sounding weathered but awake, like someone telling truths around a late-night fire. His delivery is engaging without forcing the point, and that gives the song its charm.
Then, little by little, the backing vocals drift in like mist over a field, bringing a ghostly ambience that lifts the track into more mysterious territory. Towards the end, things sharpen beautifully. A driving, churning melody rises and shimmers against a heavy, splashing thump, giving the song a final kick in the ribs. โSpirit of Youthโ is earthy, eerie, and full of restless wonder.
