Growing up can be a strange business. One minute, the world feels familiar and full of possibilities; the next, everything seems a little darker, weirder, and harder to figure out. Tulsa alt-rock trio Mingo Drive capture that unsettling shift in “Strange Happenings,” a cinematic, Halloween-ready single that turns creeping unease into an energetic rock anthem. Formed in 2024 by childhood friends Justin Scott, Samuel Bowling, and Jeremy Pelotte, the band draws on its natural chemistry to deliver music with both infectious hooks and a gritty edge.
“Strange Happenings” wastes no time establishing its eerie atmosphere. Steady, thumping beats provide a solid backbone, while immersive fuzz and gritty bass riffs give the track a thick, shadowy texture. Over it all, the vocals arrive with a gravelly intensity, adding a sense of mystery that keeps the song hovering between ominous and exhilarating. Haunting chants deepen the atmosphere, building toward the kind of massive, anthemic chorus that practically begs to be shouted back from a crowded room.
Mingo Drive taps into that peculiar feeling of realizing the world isn’t quite what you thought it was. The song balances its darker mood with an energetic, catchy delivery, making its strangeness feel less frightening than strangely liberating. It fits equally well on a late-night drive or a Halloween party playlist.
The band has already tested its crowd appeal, debuting the single at a sold-out Third Eye Blind show at Tulsa’s Cain’s Ballroom, where it reportedly sparked one of the night’s biggest reactions. With its fuzzy guitars, pounding rhythm, and eerie charm, “Strange Happenings” makes growing older sound like one wonderfully weird trip.
