At 51, Heather Smith emerges Stronger on her debut album. Released on 27 April 2024, Stronger narrates the ways the New England singer-songwriter has found herself.
The album opens with “Hey There.” This playful, country-tinged toe-tapper with a strumming guitar and steady drums lays the groundwork for her warm, inviting voice as she expresses a budding interest with a confident charm.
But “Stronger” is more than just flirtation. The title track is a raw anthem about finding strength through love and support. Singing in a lower register, Smith’s voice brims with passion, vulnerability, intimacy, and sincerity as she declares, “What’s inside of me is stronger ’cause of what’s inside of you.”
Smith isn’t afraid to explore her sensuality either. “Shot In The Dark” is a sultry slow burn, rife with whispers and roiling guitars. Her deep, heavy voice becomes a siren as she asks a special someone to “take a shot in the dark” with her. “Music Man” has an organic, rumbling drumbeat that propels the song forward with upbeatness. Smith sings catchily and fills her lyrics with heartfelt passion for the man.
The album closes with the poignant and warm rhythms of “Next Time We Say Goodbye.” Here, Smith’s voice is at its most tender and raw. Despite the pain, the melody remains strangely upbeat, with a sing-along chorus that echoes whimsical and nostalgic sing-song rhymes. It’s like she gave the tune a more serious message to pack up gentlity with empowerment.
Listen to Heather Smith’s Stronger to realize what it is like to finally make peace with yourself and find your one and only.
