When an album kicks off with a dog as its mascot, you know you’re in for something a little unorthodox—and Stupid Sexy Paulo doesn’t disappoint. The latest drop from Paulo and the Problems is as smooth as it is playful, blending old-school R&B and hip-hop with just enough modern sheen to feel fresh without trying too hard.
Take “Cruise Control,” for starters. With Mekfly on board, this track lays back into a relaxing guitar riff that shimmers like heat off pavement. The percussion, both shaken and tapped, coasts gently underneath, while Paulo’s high, grainy vocals slide in with a nonchalant ease.
Fast forward to “Lotus Blanc,” and we’re deep in dreamland featuring Dude Low. Vivid guitar work carries a cool, almost liquid rhythm, while the hazy vocals float somewhere between a lullaby and a late-night confession. The beat taps away like distant raindrops on a rooftop, pulling you further into its mellow trance.
“Summer Rain,” another Mekfly collab, sizzles. The guitar bends and winds like steam rising off hot asphalt, percussion sparkles, drums keep the groove tight, and the background harmonies bring the soul with their sweet wails trailing like flavored ether. These lines particularly engaged me, because they are specific and relatable especially to those of us well-versed with digital romance, “She told me she don’t wanna stay alone / The battery is dying in my phone.”
