If you’ve ever crushed hard on someone who didn’t quite feel the same or simply ghosted into the background of your life, Liv Adams’ debut single “Subway” will hit you right in the heart. Released July 25th and produced by Owen Butterfield (who’s worked with Stephen Sanchez and Kingswood), the track is a charming curtain-raiser for her upcoming EP Inbetween Thoughts, landing September 5.
“Subway” is a nostalgic folk-pop gem with all the sparkle of young heartbreak and the self-awareness to laugh at it later. With glistening guitar strumming and a shaky, skipping percussion, it’s got just enough whimsy to keep things light while Adams croons in a lush, velvety voice. There’s something undeniably sultry in her low register and gorgeous accent, which makes everything feel fresh.
And here’s the kicker: it’s not even really about now. “The lore behind it is a bit embarrassing,” Liv confesses. This song is about the kind of bittersweet ache you laugh about years later over coffee with friends. Or wine. Probably wine.
In a way that calls to mind Fiona Apple’s soul-baring wit and Missy Higgins’ tender bite, Liv leans into the over-romanticism of it all. Think 500 Days of Summer with a side of Lily Allen’s cheek. The vulnerable idealism is exactly what makes it stick. The song’s about putting someone on a pedestal, watching them teeter, and realizing it’s still a beautiful view from where you fell.
“Subway” might be your new comfort track. Whether it’s your first listen or your hundredth, it wraps around you like a memory. And with a second single, “Call Me” dropping August 15 and a full EP on the way, Liv Adams is just getting started. Mark your calendars and stay tuned.
